North Birmingham School: Birmingham, AL

The band program at North Birmingham School is an integral part of our curriculum. The students in our band are well behaved and most of them are honor roll students. The majority of our band students made the highest scores on all of our standardized tests. Band is not considered "extra" at North Birmingham. Band will always be a part of our curriculum here at North Birmingham School!

One of my students, Franklin is an amazingly talented guitarist! He graduated last year (2012) and is now helping me teach here. He was battling depression, struggling with substance abuse, getting into trouble with the law and dealing with the absence of his father, who is currently serving a prison sentence is Mississippi. Yet, with music in his life, he was able to completely turn his life around and I owe this to the grant of instruments given by VH1 Save The Music Foundation! Thank you!

San Fernando Elementary School - Los Angeles, CA

San Fernando Elementary School is nestled in a small neighborhood in the northeast San Fernando Valley, California. It is one of more than 500 Los Angeles Unified School District’s elementary schools. I have been an instrumental music teacher at San Fernando for the past 19 years.

VH1 Save The Music Foundation has been a major contributor to San Fernando’s successful instrumental music program. Each year, approximately 90, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students participate in a rigorous, sequential, standards based instrumental music program. When students realize they have been chosen to participate, the light in their eyes could illuminate Los Angeles. When asked about the importance of music in their lives, my students have clear and insightful thoughts. I posed the question” What did playing in an orchestra teach you about life”? Leonardo said, “Practice definitely makes perfect and it helps me study the same way I practice”. Itzel said, “Working as a team makes you successful”. Amy realized that “Leaning to play an instrument has taught me to be exact”.

San Fernando music students take pride in their accomplishments. Playing in the year-end performance is an opportunity to share their abilities and talents. These opportunities are crucial to building self-esteem and self worth.

I can speak for the entire staff and student body in saying that our gratitude to the Foundation cannot be measured.

Andres is a 9th grader who has grown in many impressive ways. When he came to us as a 6th grader he was shy, academically behind, and had difficulty making positive behavior choices. After three years of learning flute, drums, and Tenor sax Andres has grown socially and academically. He is now outgoing, loves performing, is doing well in his classes, and no longer has behavior issues. I am excited to see him continue to grow. He has already inquired about the process of making a career out of music and going to college to pursue that dream.

One of my current students, Shawn, always seems to be in trouble in his academic classes. When he gets into guitar lab, it's like a switch flips in his brain, and suddenly he's a genius. He uses his ear to transpose songs into different keys and finds alternate fingerings using his ears... his face just lights up when he holds the guitar and it's all thanks to YOU!

LaShaunda Cavin started playing the trumpet in 5th grade thanks to VH1 Save The Music. She is the first member of her family to attend a four year college out of state.

Alvina is an 8th grade clarinet player in our band. I have witnessed her grow as a leader and branch out more. When she first joined band, she was very quiet, and never spoke. She now is our clarinet section leader, participates in the CPS All City Band, and even auditioned for, and made, the school dance team. She has shown strong leadership skills, and has made many new friends. She is now not afraid to volunteer answers in band class. She even performed a solo at one of the informal concerts for parents with the non-profit group. She is currently auditioning for high schools, and I know she will be selected for an advanced program. - Music Teacher, Sarah Todd

Mayleen, an 8th grader, has been playing the flute for two years under my direction. I have seen tremendous growth in Mayleen in such a short time. She is very dedicated to practicing and seems very eager to learn more. Mayleen’s calm and polite personality will undoubtedly fit into any musical environment. I recommend Mayleen to perform on her flute with no reservations in any performing arts high school.

Jenny Lind Elementary School – Minneapolis, MN

Jenny Lind Elementary School received a grant of instruments from VH1 Save The Music Foundation 2009. This wonderful program gave us 36 quality string instruments for our students to use.

Our school principal has the vision for all students in 1st through 4th grade to play a string instrument. During the 1st year of having our new instruments, I taught group violin lessons to all 1st graders. We now have all the 1st and 2nd graders taking violin lessons! Jenny Lind Elementary is an 87% free and reduced lunch school. We feel our students deserve to learn to play an instrument but realize that renting one from a store is not an option. Having the VH1 Save The Music grant is an incredible gift to our students and our community!

PS/IS 180 – HARLEM, NY

“This is my tenth year of having a guitar group at PS/IS 180 in Harlem playing guitars donated by the VH1 Save The Music Foundation. The 4th, 5th and 6th graders get to play acoustic guitars as well as electric guitars that are part of a guitar lab. Each school year I find myself saying, "This is my best group yet!" This year that feeling was especially strong. Each year the group includes students who are continuing their guitar studies and those who are just beginning. It's always heartening for me to see the more experienced students teaching the beginners and 'catching them up.'

I have a student who had behavior problem at times in his general music class. On his first band lesson for percussion, I was teaching him paradiddles and a ride rhythm. We continued the lesson as I took the kids back to their general music class. The general music teacher saw us continuing to work outside his door as they changed classes, and he said "Wow, I have never seen him focus like that!" He has been great in band and not a problem in general music class ever since.

There has been marked improvement in the students' academic, behavioral, and disciplinary progress for those who have taken part in the instrumental music program donated by VH1 Save The Music Foundation. With that said, the improvements in the school climate since the grant was given is remarkably more positive. This, in turn, positively benefits each student enrolled in the school.

The band students playing the grant of instruments provided by VH1 Save The Music Foundation continuously go above and beyond what is expected of them. Many of these students are also doing extremely well in all their classes. We, as band directors, believe this to be nothing more than a direct correlation between involvement in band and academic success.
